Ice damming and freeze-thaw
Ice damming is the biggest winter threat to Macomb Township roofs. When heat escapes through the attic and warms the roof deck, snow melts at the ridge and refreezes at the colder eave — that backed-up ice forces water under the shingles. Macomb Township has a lot of ranch homes and 1980s split-levels where low-pitch eaves are especially prone to ice dam buildup. Two things prevent it: ice and water shield extending at least 24 inches inside the heated wall line at every eave, and balanced attic ventilation to keep the deck cold. If you’ve had ceiling stains after a hard winter, both likely need attention.
